New Year’s Eve 2023

 We just came from the Perriello New Year’s Eve Party. There was plenty of food for adults and children. I ate two slices  of roast beef and lots of cookies. 

Linda had plenty of food and people to serve and clean up. The teenagers were in an upstairs room. I went there for the last year party but not this one. The house is very large and decorated with lovely furniture. The Christmas decorations were spectacular. They were everywhere;  on book shelves, on tables on the fire place mantles. I should have taken pictures. If we are invited next year I will. I Sat with Sonia Smith who has lots of money according to Rick. She donates her money to various causes.  I told her about teaching at Jackson Via when  it was opened in 1969??? 

Her personal story was: She told me she was 64 and talked about balance. I told her I was 81. She was surprised. 

Tonight we go to Walker’s house. Joseph is going to serve us a French meal. I have been trying to learn some French words and phrases and I Dress like a Frenchman.

Two of my children were at the party.  Walker and Catherine Bradley. She looked lovely in a red dress. All three of Walker’s children were there. Bess's teacher was there but I did not know her. 

The decorations were impressive. Many people I talked to commented on them. I also talked to the president of the Board of Supervisors.Anne Mallick. 

Paige’s husband took a picture of us at the end of the party. He is a doctor and I was impresses at how intelligent he was. He talked about AI WHICH IS A FAVORITE TOPIC OF CONVERSATION.No one understands it. We all want to learn.

At Gidian Ridge in North Carolina

 We are at a lovely Band B in the mountains of North Carolina celebrating our 55 Aniversary.

I came to the central area hoping to watch the Sunset but there is too much noise and commotion so I am going to go back to our room. We drove along the Parkway this morning but before that went to Blowing Rock. The town is named for this Rock formation. The whole B and B is decorated for Christmas. 🎅 this morning I found a book Plain and Fancy. I am going to take it with me it is all about sewing. 

Went to movie about lenny Bernstein

 This famous co poser had a very complicated life. But he was well educated. He went to Harvard and the Boston Latin school. He was a Jew. He was a homosexual and he had three kids with his wife Felicia.

I just ate a delicious egg sandwich made by my husband. I put a load of black wash in the washer before we sat in the jacuzzi. When we got in we heard a loud, loud train so we could not talk. We just listened. I thought about noise. What is music and what I’d noise. It starts with the beat. That is what most people hear first when they listen to music. When they hear the beat that makes their body move. Right now Imam listening to the Halleluah voice by Handel. It took a couple  of minutes for that person, composer to come into my head. 

Today Walker and kids will come to decorate tree. I bought a ginger house for them to put together. 

I bought two. 

We listened to Hallalula choirs at the Paramount conducted by Steve Layman. Did I start a new page.

Walker brought his kids. I took a picture of this. The theater was packed with people. Inadto save seats for them.  We were in the Balcony. The concert was free. 

Went to see Saint George and the Dragon

 It was at the community center in Nelson County. I took lots of pictures of Eliza. She now attends school at North Branch School. A private school with about 100 students. All the students were in it beginning with the very youngest. I will add some pictures.

Winter solstice

Today is the shortest day of the year. I went outside and took a picture of the sun rise. I came in and ate four sausage bites. When I first woke up I read all about Taylor Swift the Person of the year on Time Mgazine.

She wrote most of her own song, many when she was 14 and 13 years old. She did home schooling but went to lots of writing workshops with other people. Her mother and father were stock Brokers. Her grandmother was an opera singer. She wrote grandma was her role model. She took acting lessons too in NYC.

The biggest event this week was Eliza’s performance in “Saint George and the Dragon”  at community Center.

She played the flute, played the bells  and sang. She also did banging with a stick. Rick and I sat in  the front row so I could  take pictures easily.

The preformance was at 1 pm. We came home and went to the BHSC. I exercised on the running machine and also the weightlifting machines. 

Again I had trouble sleeping because of my tingling feet. I took sleep medicine 💊 andI Eason  salt sat in a hot  bath. I also did yoga poses. Both my writing teachers do yoga. I am going to pay more attention whenI stretch and beginning

 yoga poses. 

Senior lunch with Paul Zack and friends

 We ate a delicious lunch prepared by Elizabeth. There were favors on each table which I 9owill share with grandkids. There was candy and hot chocolate balls. Paul Zach was quite emotional when telling stories about the music. Right now I am on our sofa. I had a friendly day. I met two artists at Michael’s. I bought a Pour kit and had another long talk with the check out lady. The orni g was traumatic because Rick wanted to change time of illumination. He did change but then changed back. We will meet Wendy Thielbar at Boar’s Head on Thursday and have Bob and Patsy on Friday.

I just finished a note to Cetta’s I ate some cheese when I first came in the house. I looked in the toy store when I went to the bank. I deposited $60:which I got for selling the Bacus Lamp at Circa. I had a difficult time finding Circa. Bill has become my senior friend.  He used to work at the BHSC Rackets.

Reading old journals

 I am reading my journal from 1997. I was working at the Learning Center. I writ  about Anne McGann.

Last evening we went to Matt Murray’s party.  He had family pictures covering one wall. There were pictures everywhere in his house. I talked to him. I suggested he go to Ireland. He was pleasant then just left. The pictures bothered me because there were so many.

We came home and watched the neighborhood meeting on Zoom. The neighbors approved of having an engineering group fix the dam. The cost will be around $650,00.19people approved. 5 sad no .  The neighbors also approved being assessed 10,000. Steve Hiss was in charge. I sat by Rick for awhile but the lay on one of the beds and listened. Rick told me I was not allowed to sleep on the

bed that is his. It has the quilt I designed on it. 

My goal for today wa to clean the family room. I am still organizing it. I read the newspaper about UVA. 

Students whose parents who make $150,00 can now go free or almost free. I want to show this article to David Quinn since he wants Togo to UVA. 

I wrapped Christmas gifts. I selected picture to include in my book. I ordered another Storyworth book.I took all the trash to the top of the driveway after emptying all the trash cans. I ate half o the left over sadwhich and an avacado and an orange. I ate cake and ice cream for desert. 

Helping clean up the Yard

 Rick is outside cleaning up the yard. Tonight we go to Monticello. We gon an hour and a half.

Walker called me whe I got woke up and ask me if I could come and watch Bess because she was sick. I had a nice visit. We played two games. She won both but I leaned lots just watching her. She is self assured. The first game was a game about the states and their names and Capitol. We had to look at the words carefully and make decisions. Then we played another game about cheese. It took. Awhile to set up. But she was very patient. She made a round ball with yarn. And also played her violin. They got new tall chairs that are red. Hallie got her hair cut but did not talk about it. The news is depressing. The UN just on Humanitarian cease fire in Gaza. I need to finish wrapping the gifts I am going to send Tucker. 

Went for a Walk aroun the lake

 Bradley came by to pick up the check for her fence. She ask me if I wanted to walk around the lake. I was hesitant but then I said okey. We walked the whole way. We talked about real-estate and stories she remembers about houses and friends. The Atkinson lived in the Robinson’s house she talked about getting a horse out of a whole in the adjacent property.

She was on her way to Staunton. It had something to do with Real Estate. Rick wants to be very evasive when he talks to her and also to me. My neck hurts so I want to put the heating pad on it. I am charging the vacuum sweater. I hear a click. 

I just ate an avocado bagel sandwich. This morning I ate two ham biscuits from our Guild party. I also ate apple and cheese pieces. 

We passed two neighbors while we were walking, Mary Robinson and Mr. Milligan. I hear a plane over head. 

Magnificent Thanksgiving

 Walker brought over old movies from  our early married life before we had children and when  Catherine Bradley was first born. He added music. There were lots of Joe and Louise too. And also Marty and especially Berkeley when she was a baby.  The best part of this episode was when Marty was dancing,,

We had a great dinner. Rick worked very hard to make it perfect. Another  plus  is David and Bradley came. They enjoyed the movies. We talked to David at dinner and he was very grown up. He talked a lot about Robotics Club. He is now the president. The only disappointment was Eliza did not come. 

Tucker, Bess and Joseph all slept her the night before. later today we go to the Paramount to see The NutCracker. Bess will dance. 

We were outside and inside. The kids played basket ball. Walker and kids, Bradley and David ran in the Turkey Trot. Some wore the shirts they were given.we went to Ivy School and watched Flag football.

At Violin recital I am sitting in the third row

 Thee teacher is checking to see if the students violins are in tune. She does this by playing a few bars.

The kids are downstairs. There are people in the audience. Walker went to Wegmans. Hallie is at the practice for The Nutcracker Suite. The pianist is getting ready. The kids all have buttons on their shirts or pants. It is 2:15.there is a turkey on the piano. The teacher has a long flowing sweater on. We went to church. Josh gave the sermon. I did not understand the second part. I should read the parable again. Someone has to sign in. Could you count 1 to 5? I’m not really

Home from the OutterBanks

We had an eventful four days and night.

We began by driving a new way to North Carolina. We stopped in Elizabeth City for lunch. On the way we drove past many Peanut and Cotton farms, all small. Coinsidentally I am reading about Jimmy Carter who grew up on a peanut far, they also grew cotton. His father was a tough business man who made everyone work when they were not in school. It sounds like his relatives raised him since his mother worked as a nurse in the local hospital. He had two sibling girls and later a brother Billy who got him in trouble when her was in.president. 

Our fist hotel was in Sabderling, white large but close to the beach. We walked on the beach the next day and met some girls. One went to UVA and she took our picture. We also stopped and looked at the Inland passage. We saw a sailboat coming toward us and took a picture. We wanted to see more but the road was closed. It was cold in Sanderling but I did write in Story-worth. I wonder what Rick was doing. 

It is better if I write right away because I forget. Today my grandchildren are coming. We are going to do an art project. I collected shells but decided they should add a picture and it should be a gift to someone

I learned how to make Madge podge. It is water an Elmer’s glue. We are going to use it today. Rick was reading Virginia Week.ey. 

 

Talking aboutMontague Miller

 Catherine Bradley is upstairs talking to Rick.

She talked to both of us here in the family room. She has become very invested in Real Estate but has not sold any properties yet. I am not the best person to talk to but Rick is because he represented the local lawyers for a long time and knows many sales people.

I was writing my entry for my writing class. I am tryin to clean up my different rooms. I worked on two albums this morning. When I first woke up I watched the news and ate cereal with bananas. I watched a show about the new kicker for UVA.  He is thirty four years old. He was a helicopter Pilate. He started a Uva but had to inlist in the military. I also read my book about writing non fiction. I read about grammar and sentences. Every sentence has to have a noun and a verb. Punctuation is extremely important because it helps with meaning, when to stop, when to explain.

My daughter just left. She was rubbing her hands. She said she was cold.

President Biden is in Israel

 The War in Gaza continues. Last night a hospital was bombed. I have the TVon. The president is talking to and shaking the hands of first responders and families of those killed. Before he had talks with president Netenyaho.

I am on the sofa. Rick is on the ladder washing off grit and dirt from the chimney. Now he went outside. Yulma’s husband is coming today to paint the garage. 

Last night we went to Kenwood to a Monticello social gathering. It was also educational.  The Liberian gave a talk about what was in the building and why it was built. It is a place where scholars go to do research and write books about Jefferson. I talked to the man who plays Jefferson in dramatic scenes around Monticello. He remembered I ask about Jefferson-writing his own version of the New Testament. 

If I add a picture right now I cannot write something and see it. Everyone on TV looks nervous. Some people wanted to say that Israel bombed the hospital.  I am still working on Scrapbooks and writing in my Story-worth  journal. I do not have the sound on the TV. Rick left the ladder by the chimney.  He is still outside. 

Early morning sitting by the fire

 I am in Birdsall, sitting close to a warm raging fire my husband just made for me. I did not sleep well even though I took four Tylenol during the night to help me calm down and sleep. This will be our second full day at camp. Rick is out fishing. He knew he would not return to sleep so he woke up. I was in the bathroom and he went into the other bathroom. He dressed in his warm shirt when  

I am going fishing.I asked,  “can I go, he answered no. Then I said. Can’I make a fire. I am reading a book about Key West. I am reading it because my daughter gave it to me and I want her to know I read it. I also want to use it as a model for my writing.

Right now,  I’m cold and want to go to our bed room and put a blanket around me. when I write I am suppose to create scenes to draw my audience in to the Story. 

I am warmer now with the grey soft blanket over my shoulders. I see the yellow flames dancing around the logs. I hear the low rumble.

Last night after dinner we all went to Summers so the kids could make S’mores. s Walker showed us the exercise he is trying to learn to loosen his hips. Hallie gave him a book for his fiftieth birthday to loose his body to make exercise and walking easier in old age. All the younger people except Tucker sat on the floor and tried the exercises mostly led by Hallie and sometimes Liz and Cole.

Now the screen is lighter. The kids made s’mores and ate the,. R.Tucker made one for me which was thoughtful. Toward the end of the gathering Gus came over to the sofa and ask me to rub his back. When we got back to our cabin DQ was here a lone. I thought he seemed lost. I am purging the room. I just looked at the loon picture above the side sofa and then the large pot on the mantle above the fire. Before we leave I should write in the journal. The wood o the wall is all new and light. In years past the wood was always dark brown and old looking. 

My goals

 I am going to make a web Page and add my pictures. I think I will put prices on them and see if anyone wants to buy them.

We are home from Camp. It was the best year ever except Eliza was not there. 

Both Walker and Tucker’s family had a successful living experience in Summers. The kids all had playmates. They came over three times to get DQ to play with them. I made an album with pictures of the week. I am going to add it to Facebook soon. I am three quarters of the way through the book Ihave been reading. I am learning about Key West and the life of soldiers after the first War. 

I washed clothes but must now fold and put them away. 

I found a law book I want to give Walker but want to read it first.

I Paint therefore I am

I like color and want to make it visible to everyone in the world.

I am beyond excited I am amazed at what I see each day and want to remember it so I paint. 

I am at Center for talk on photography

 It is going to be about Public lands. I am upstairs. The rooms all have something going on. I know two of the artists but not well. The men around me are using their phones. I went to the Dollar store and bought Christmas and birthday bags and lots of other paper. I spent 38.00 dollars. Then  I went to TJ max and bought a ring. For 26.00. This is probably a good place to come and sit since many other people are sitting here too. 

This morning I worked for awhile on my album. I have it almost finished. I am working on it to help me with Storyworth. The second part of my life story, Volume 2. Rick stayed upstairs until I was about to leave. I ask him if he wanted to come to this. Hillary Clinton was interviewed. She talked about the Republican part and how it is dysfunctional. The government must balance the budget in fourth five days. They must also pick a new person to be head of the House  of Representative. Kevin McCarthy resigned. 

I watched the presentations and took notes about Mr. Greenberg. He is very dedicated. He talked a long time about his life and why he is doing this. He has a son who is 50 year old so he must be my contemporaries.  The presentation, It inspired me. We have always visited the parks of Virginia and maybe I will take more pictures now. I ate some of the cheese and crackers. That is what I am doing right now. I do not belong to the Center. It is far from our house. If I c,e here I will not go to BHSC as much. Rick did not come. I think he is exercising. 

Yulma’s husband started cleaning garage

 He and his assistant powere washed the wall and floor. They will paint it next week.

I decided to go to Dave Zahl’s Sunday school. I am glad I did. It was all about tattoos. He also talked about the invasion of Gaza by Israel’s. I ask him several questions. After church a group went to Sultan Kebab for lunch and togetherness. I led the grace. I was proud of myself both times for speaking up.

Rich just left to go to Boar’ Head and run errands. He said Dave Soan had a stroke and Kelsey is going to have a son tomorrow. He rushed out as he often does.

At Alumni Hall

 I am here to hear Larry Sabato give his annual, more than the Score. I came at 8:15. I have been uploading pictures to make a card for Christmas, more people are coming now. They are expecting at least 500. But there are still may empty seats. They are serving banana bread and blueberry bread. I am in the second row.  I was the very first to sit down but there were lots of people here getting ready for the event. I called Rick but he is exercising at the gym. I see one person I know.  Wheeler. he is Walker’s neighbor.

Last night we went to the movie and then ate dinner at Sal’s. We shared spaghetti. My watch and the iPad both say 9:50 so I am ok time wise. The person I know is Wheeler. He is in Rick’s Rotary. Well he used to be. He did not want to pay for lunch. They meet at the Green croft. 

I like to come to this event because Larry always tells funny stories.  He will talk about the upcoming election and maybe the Kevin McCarthy fiasco.

He taught  20, 000 students. Now he is talking. At UVA for 53 years.  Forgets names sometimes so he uses the word Buddy.

How is you back problemis a universal question. He introduced some of his students. 

Talking about politics. He can always make connections to past. Watched news this morning.

I thought he would talk more about US. But he is talking about Israel.

We have social media so no one knows what will happen. Now he is talking about AI.

Republicans and Democrats are even so there will be only a few real contests.

All red Republicans. Maybe Texas and Florida.

Blue safe Democrats.

Toss up Arizona, Montana, Ohio  the talk is over. I am now in the front hall. Lucy was here. I also talked to wheeler. I have to think about what he said befor the conclusions. I hear music outside. I am going to go to the grocery store.  Life in Cville centers around UVA and all the students living here. 

Went to Senior Lumch

 I am home from lunch. Amanda spoke. She s very young. She grew up in a mega church n Northern Va. she became friends with Sam when he was in charge of the Garage. She graduated from UVA and the went to Duke for the ministry. I sat right beside  Mike  Dickens and we had a long talk about the people living in tents at Market Street Park. 

Amanda said she was a horse woman. She grew up riding horses. The lunch was crowded. I am going to send the card toMalissa. I sent her a get well card.

Rick and I went to Mike Dicken’s talk about black barbers in Cville last night.

I wanted to take him to dinner but he said it was his birthday. Today I bought him a birthday car. I also bought one for my brother. 

We are home

 I am sitting in bed. I want to write all day and catch up with things I missed. I am going to write in Story worth every day until I catch up. I want to think about big things in my life. What have I accomplished. 

I am reading a lot of books about writing to give me  a different perspective and not be so critical.

Now we are home from Art in the Park.

I participated in several workshops. Today we made quilt Post cards. I also went downstairs and listened to a man talk about photograph. It was three men and all they did is show pictures they took and talk about how they could be better. It was too much for me. I did not want to leave but finally did.

I also went to a workshop on keeping a nature journal and also one about calligraphy. I made a picture of the word for water in Chinese. I am going to take it to my Watercolor meeting tomorrow. 

I have unpacked. I am looking out the living room window at the statue of Saint Francis. A house in our neighborhood just sold for i million four hundred thousand dollars. This means our taxes will go up. This week

I will go with Rick to the Frontier Culture museum at 10: o’clock on Wednesday. On Thursday Imwill go to the senior luncheon. 

Today is our last day of cruise

 We watch Stockholder’s meeting at 9am. Rick is at the gym I have been organizing my possessions. We leave tomorrow at 8:30. We are going to get an Uber cab which Rick has ordered. Last night I went to the show. The entertainer sang Celine songs. She was not as good as earlier night. We ate in Ginger with a Canadian couple who had a condo in Naples Florida. The man was a bit on top of himself but loosened up after awhile. 

The stockholder’s meeting was very moving. I had tears in my eyes. At the end of the meeting different friends gave tribute to Tucker and they showed some of the pictures we sent. I wrote to him and told him this was my hug since I could not be there to give him a real hug. 

Rick has, had He was very worried about driving from NYC to Holderness, Camp in the rain. It did not rain but it was a five hour drive and he just did not feel he could do it. I kept my mouth closed and did not insist whichI might have done in the past. 

Waiting to show officaials passports

 Everyone on the ship has to show their passports to officials.we are back in America.

I watched the show last night. Exotic dancing and singing. I stayed up late. We sang YMCA at the end. Tv is on and we are watching theTV, lots of traffic. The sky line ti tall buildings in all shapes and colors, black white and grey. We are going to get on the on-off bus, see city highlights and I am tired so I think I will ap.

I am in Horizon’s Lounge

 I usually go to drawing but wanted to do needlepoint one day. They only give out packets on a sea day.she gave me a scissors kit. It was the only choice besides a pass point kit that said Horrizons.

Last night after eating dinner in the Grand Dinnongnroom  we sat and watched the violin corset. I ask Rick to send a picture to Walker which he did. We stayed for the whole event. I went to the Vista lounge and watched the show which was an opera singer who sang popular songs that were operatic, the first song was Evette and she had the audience sing with her. I bought her tape for Rick as a thank you gift. 

He opened it this morning. I am surprised ther are many people doing needle point. Usually I do art at this time but I needed a break. I did needlepoint when we were first married. I wrote about it in my memoirs. I am beginning to see the same people I met at different times on the cruise. I have to return my iPad that I got from the digital center. There ar lots and lots of old people on this cruise which makes me feel uncomfortable.  No one seems happy, they all seem grumpy and sickly. But most are kind. I want to add a picture before I finish. 

The sewing woman are chatty but quiet, pulling string, piling their work to put in bags. The leader has the kids set out on a counter. She took my room number. I am only allowed one kit. One woman opposite from me has a large canvas with sunflowers. 

Installing Washing machine

 A young man is installing a new washing machine. He is patiently on the floor turning a lot of screws on the underside. I do not want to disturb him. I am going to ask him about the warranty before He leaves. Then I am going to put our dirty dishes in the machine. I hear the screws turning. He is the son of the. Anager. He went to a Christian school in. Ohio. He told me he does not do any sports but takes his girlfriend out to dinner for fun. He and his father have a trophy. Business for fun. His mother cut his hair last night. She has been a beautician since she. Was fourteen. I was painting as Imworked. I am going to throw away my paintings. Now he is using his camera. I am looking at the bouquet that Susie ‘s wife made. He is very thorough That is a word I need to look up.I just looked up thorough. It means he is doing his work completely, checking all the details. Now he is under the machine again and also looking at the pipes under the sink. 

Yesterday when I was talking to Eliza we talked. About color. She knew her colors. I am trying to name all the colors more accurately. We talked about indigo and periwinkle.he has been at least one half hour trying to make it tight. 

I am reading a riddle book. They are very difficult. The repair person is frustrated. He keeps tightening more screws. Now he went outside. I am going to go to the BHSC later when Walker is there. Today Rick went to Richmond. He is having lunch with Foundation people.

My leg hurts

 I could hardly walk when going up and down Saint Michele. I used my cane and was very slow. Rick waited for me so I knew I was connected to some one. I am in bd right now waiting for him to come back and then we will head out on our tour on a train and then a boat or vice versa. I bout bio freeze in the Spa. I also signed up for a leg massage for tomorrow.  morning. I might cancel. We are in Torbay. I am not exactly sure where it is but it is the British Riverera 

I also do art tonight when we get back last night we sat in the jacuzzi and the. Went to thenCaptain’s  party and met a couple who had a Virginia background but knew President Bide. In college they were two years behind him.

In the Concierge Lounge

 I am sitting with a large group of people in the Concierge lounge. The ship cannot enter the port of Cork because of the fog. The ship waited about two hours but was not allowed to enter so we are on the way to Belfast and then Dublin. I went to the library and sat and then cam back to our room and wrote post cards. We are allowed to use this lounge since we paid more for our room. It is small and crowded. I think later I will sit by the pool or the jacuzzi. I took two books from the library. Both are about self improvement. I thought I would have more time to write especially in my Storyworth account. Maybe this afternoon. I like seeing what other people do with their time. Most people on the ship are old. I am having trouble sending anything over the phone which is frustrating. I want to take pictures of the pictures I like. Last evening I took the drawing class and learned how to draw a face. This morning I practiced. The instructions were all about proportions. To me the hardest part are th jaws, I am going to look it up after I leave here. 

Saint Jon’s Newfoundland

 I am sick. I am in bed with a cold. We are still at sea., Rick is at the gym. It is Sunday but I am not sure what time it is because the time keeps changing as we return to North America. We have had three lectures about th Atlantic Ocean. Christopher Columbus, linbeergh, who flew across the Atlantic alone and a third lecture about racing across the world in a sail boat. The man who wrote the book is on board and is selling the book in the gift shjop.

We ate in a specialty restaurant last night. Pola. I Iate a lobster served under a fancy silver plate. Rick ate Surf and Turf. There is a beautiful Cathedral here and. Amber we can go there and pray. I am glad I learned how to connect to the internet.

We are home from the reunion.

 We came home late Sunday afternoon. It is Tuesday morning. Walker’ks kids were here all day yesterday. We watched Sleeping Beauty. I saw it sixty years ago. Rick played cards with the kids. We tried to play a travel game but it was confusing. Bess and I watch Pappa Pig together. The characters all speak British English. They talk about everything they do.

Today I am going to put everything that I think I need in my suitcase and get ready for our cruise to England, France, Ireland. We then cruise the ocean for three days to Newfoundland and next down the coast of eastern US to Boston where we leave the ship and drive to Rockywald Deephaven and attend Tucker’s departure from ten Years on the Camp Board.
